Energy Singularity, a China-based fusion energy company, has set a record by building the world’s first high-temperature superconducting tokamak device.

Dubbed ‘HH70,’ the device is located in the eastern region of Shanghai. It marks China’s foray into the fusion-based clean energy market.

The recent rise of wind and solar projects around the world is aimed at helping countries move away from fossil fuels and towards cleaner energy. However, both these energy sources face intermittency issues and cannot be switched on at will, continuing our reliance on fossil fuels. For more on this development, check out today’s Must-Read.

đŸ© World’s 1st high-temperature superconducting tokamak built in China

Under the extremely high temperatures of nuclear fusion reactions, hydrogen atoms fuse to become helium and release large amounts of energy as a byproduct.

This reaction occurs on the Sun, and scientists have been working to replicate it here on Earth by creating a plasma soup of positively charged hydrogen ions and electrons.

A tokamak is a donut-shaped vessel that can help contain the plasma so its temperature can be raised to replicate the conditions of the Sun. This is why they are also referred to as “artificial suns.”

🩕 Estimated 11,000-pound, largest horned dinosaur fossil discovered in US

Scientists have recently unearthed a skull and partial skeleton in Kennedy Coulee in northern Montana along the USA-Canada border. Evidence indicates that it belongs to a dinosaur.

The newly discovered species, seemingly a plant-eating horned dinosaur, has been called Lokiceratops rangiformis. This species is likely 12 million years older than its famous cousin, triceratops, and was the largest horned dinosaur of its time. It had an estimated length of 22 feet and a weight of 11,000 pounds.

This dinosaur is known for its unique and large blade-like horns on the back of its frill. Scientists found that Lokiceratops lived more than 78 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period.

đŸ“± AI: Phone app detects strokes from face in seconds with 82% accuracy

Biomedical engineers at RMIT University have unveiled a new smartphone tool equipped with AI capabilities that could revolutionize the early detection of strokes.

This new technology uses AI to study facial expressions. It helps paramedics spot stroke symptoms quickly, which could save lives and prevent long-term disability.

Strokes happen when blood flow to the brain is blocked, which starves brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. Strokes are a major cause of disability and death worldwide. Notably, the time to act during a stroke is quite short. Every minute becomes crucial and can significantly impact a patient’s recovery.
