The European Space Agency reported that ERS-2's reentry occurred naturally entering Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean, depleting all remaining fuel during deorbiting aimed to minimize the risk of internal malfunctions. This led to fragmentation at altitudes shared with active satellites. Consequently, ERS-2's descent was uncontrollable, solely driven by unpredictable atmospheric drag, ending nearly 30 years of space mission.
