OpenAI has made a major move against online disinformation by uncovering and stopping five hidden influence campaigns that used its AI technology.

These campaigns were run by state actors and private companies from Russia, China, Iran, and Israel, according to a detailed report from the company. This report marks the first time a major AI company has publicly detailed how its technology has been co-opted for online deception.

The campaigns aimed to manipulate public opinion and influence geopolitical dynamics through the use of AI-generated content. For more on this development, check out today’s Must-Read.

🕵🏽‍♂️ OpenAI busts its AI-driven propaganda networks from Russia, China, Israel

The report details how state actors and private companies have used OpenAI’s tools in various geopolitical contexts. Notable campaigns include Russia’s Doppelganger and China’s Spamouflage, both of which have been active for years and have utilized AI to further their goals.

The Doppelganger campaign employed OpenAI’s technology to generate anti-Ukraine content in multiple languages. It also translated and edited articles supporting Russia in the Ukraine conflict, converting them into social media posts for broader dissemination.

Israel’s campaign, identified as Zeno Zeno, involved a firm managing political campaigns. The campaign used AI to create fictional personas and biographies for use on social media platforms in Israel, Canada, and the United States, posting anti-Islamic messages and other politically charged content.

🌌 300 million years post-Big Bang? Oldest-ever galaxy discovered by NASA

The powerful James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has smashed its previous record for the most distant galaxy ever discovered in the universe.

This record-breaking galaxy existed some 290 million years after the Big Bang. For perspective, this was when the universe was only two percent of its current age of 13.8 billion years old.

The new findings provide crucial insights into the Cosmic Dawn, a cosmic period between 50 million and one billion years after the Big Bang. It was a time when the infant universe was extremely chaotic, bursting with the formation of its first stars, galaxies, and even black holes.

💣 Russian analyst favors nuclear ‘demonstration’ to warn West, Ukraine

Dmitry Suslov, a member of the prominent think tank Council for Foreign and Defence Policy, has proposed that Russia conduct a “demonstration” nuclear explosion to thwart Ukraine from using its arms to attack targets in Russian territory.

The proposal was made in an article for the business magazine Profil and later repeated on a TV show Suslov hosts on Russia’s First Channel, media reports said.

“To confirm the seriousness of Russia’s intentions and to convince our opponents of Moscow’s readiness to escalate, it is worth considering a demonstrative (i.e. non-combat) nuclear explosion,” Suslov wrote in his piece.
